About Our Environmental Programs

“I have been going to Common Ground Ecology Camp ever since I was six years old.  Over the past three years, I have made many friends and have learned a lot about farms, animals, and where we live.  Common Ground is a lot of fun, and it’s educational.  Common Ground is the best camp I’ve ever gone to!  With all the counselors by my side as great friends, I am very happy.”  - Madison, summer camper

“Because of Common Ground, I am an environmental advocate.  College is nearing faster than the polar ice caps are melting.  I know what I want to do with the rest of my life.  I am going to pursue a career as an environmental journalist.  The fiery passion of loving the eath has caused me to turn towards environmentally focused colleges and solidify my love for the earth.”  - Jasmine, summer camp alumna

“Just this past weekend, I attended the Open Farm Day. When I first arrived, my family and I were greeted by a student who opened the door for us and showed us where the program was being held.  The food that was offered, fresh from the farm, was made and served by the students.  As my family and I were leaving we stopped and looked at many projects the student constructed throughout the building.  Then we wandered through the school’s grounds noticing the bridge and stairs the children built, the trails the students blaxed, and of course the rows and rows of garden that these teenagers tilled, seeded, and harvested.” – Melissa Shaw, community member

About Common Ground High School

“My daughter, Lily, graduated from CG in 2003. She was pushed, empowered, enabled (in the best way) in her year at Common Ground. Common Ground took a slightly spoiled suburban teenage, and turned her into a capable, confident, broad-minded, incredibly hard-working and adaptable young woman.  I saw that she was involved in community projects, hands-on farm and garden work, and well-taught academics during her year there. The campus was, and remains, a safe haven for the students.  Seniors were pushed hard to find appropriate colleges and apply to them.  Education, in the sense of life-long learning, was a primary focus of the staff there.”   Sheryll Leamer, Parent

“We notice that every adult knows every student in the building.  Students have told us they feel safe at Common Ground, and it is clear that they find many things that draw their interests and develop their skills.” Terry Freeman and Jane Shepard, The Consultation Center

“Common Ground is a proven leader in training youth to better understand our reliance on the natural world, our impact on nature and the resulting impacts on our health and well being”  Stacey Johnson-Pridgeon, US Environmental Protection Agency

“I see the Common Ground School as one of the nation’s pioneering education efforts to connect important traditional subjects with topics related to ecology.  It is run by an inspired and devoted collection of faculty, staff, and volunteers, and is nationally visible for the quality of its education … Biology and genetics can be learned with real plants on a real farm.  Math can be learned in the context of changes in environmental conditions.  A high-quality education woven together with key issues related to ecology is the promise of such a school, and in the case of Common Ground, the promise is being fulfilled.”  Kelly Brownell, Yale University

“I am in love with Common Ground School and I have been a part of many of their activities.  The students have a mind to work and they also are inquisitive when they don’t understand.  They pay attention and ask questions.  They tell you of their dreams and what they want their future to be like.”  Elsie Cofield, AIDS Interfaith Network
