Hill Development Corporation

The Hill Development Corporation helps people to get safe and affordable homes in New Haven, and gives homeownership counseling to people who want to buy homes. The organization also aims to fight urban blight through doing area clean ups and by trying to change the city's policies on abandoned building in the Hill. The Hill development corporation was founded in 1980 by a group of people that lived in the Hill and were very interested in the economic growth of their neighborhood. It began as the Upper Hill Project Area Committee. It is now located on 649 Howard Ave, in a building that used to be the New Haven Police Department in the early 1900's.

Jewish Home for the Aged

The first building was erected by the Jewish Home for the Aged, the Moshav Zekainim , in 1923. It is on Davenport Avenue in New Haven. The building is now used entirely for administrative offices. Over the years there have been several additions to the Home and today, fully modernized, it is still in use. Many Common Ground students take Certified Nurse Assistant classes through the Jewish Home, and learn first-hand what it is like to care for the elderly. But many programs are up in the air at the moment. There are currently plans to move the Jewish Home out of New Haven, causing some concern and some excitement among those who use its services.

Hill Health Center

In the 1960s, low income people in the Hill and residents all over New Haven had hard times getting medical care, groceries for their families, and jobs. In December of 1968 The Hill Health Center was established. Their mission was to and still is to provide accessible, comprehensive and quality health care and behavioral health care to low income and underserved residents of New Haven. For 36 years The Hill Health Center has kept up with their mission. They have expanded over New Haven to 18 different locations providing the same health care. Health care services include medical, dental, laboratory, nutrition, nursing, behavioral health, and programs for special populations, such as homeless people and persons with AIDS. Other than health care the Hill Health Center has the WIC program, and helps people to apply for food stamps, Section 8 (which helps people with there rent), and many other programs.

Congress Avenue

Congress Avenue is a major street in the Hill. In the 1800s, the street was filled with many stores and factories; one big factory on Congress Ave was the Silk Globe Works, which is now a Yale laboratory. Lots of those 19th century businesses on Congress are now knocked down and turned into residential homes. Today Congress Avenue is filled with lots of people: it's a popular hang-out spot for the people who live around there. Congress Avenue is full of surprises.
