The contest was planned and put into action by 9th grade students at Common Ground. It was these students who developed the contest idea, wrote a grant proposal to fund the project, reached out to schools throughout New Haven, judged submissions, and handed out the prizes on Wednesday.
In all, over 75 students competed in the contest, producing a huge variety of outstanding work. Entries included movies, art in a variety of media, poems, stories, and essays. View a powerpoint presentation of several winning entries.
Common Ground would like to thank the sponsors of the contest for their generous support. The School for Ethical Education provided a $300 grant to kick off the project through its Student Activists for Service Learning youth philanthropy board. Solio, a leading maker of solar chargers, provided the first place prizes for middle and high school winners. The Devil's Gear Bike Shop and Hulls Art Supply and Framing, two outstanding New Haven businesses, donated gift certificates for middle and high school winners.
